Welcome to the Writing Center, a place where Franciscan University of Steubenville students can receive assistance with their writing assignments throughout all stages of the writing process. Whether you’re struggling to find a topic for a research paper or you just need an additional perspective to critique a draft in progress, our peer writing consultants can help.

Please note, however, that the Writing Center does not function as a drop-off editorial service. While our writing consultants are happy to proofread papers, they do so with the objective of helping students become better writers. Consultants do not correct errors or make revisions as students passively observe. Rather, visitors to the Writing Center are expected to take full ownership of their work, incorporating (or disregarding) feedback from consultants as they deem appropriate.

Tutoring is free for students enrolled at Franciscan University of Steubenville. Sessions usually last for half an hour and are scheduled by appointment only. (If time slots are available, visitors can schedule on-the-spot appointments in the Writing Center.)

Visitors are encouraged to leave feedback about their experiences at the Center so that we can continue to strive for excellence in providing our services.

Meeting with a writing consultant

If you live on campus and want to see a writing consultant, please schedule an appointment using our online planner. In the rare event our network server is down, you can schedule an appointment in person by visiting the Writing Center. (Unfortunately, the WC does not have a dedicated phone line at this time, so we cannot schedule appointments over the telephone.)

Online students can make appointments the same way that traditional students do–through our online scheduler. Immediately after scheduling your appointment, you will see a confirmation screen saying that you have successfully scheduled your appointment. It is at this time that you will be given the opportunity to attach a file. The consultant with whom you have made the appointment will look over your paper and return it with comments for revision. The consultant will need to see the instructions for the assignment, so be sure to attach those as well.

The Appointment 

At your appointment, you and the consultant will collaboratively establish an agenda at the beginning of each session. It is important that the agenda be manageable since, of course, the two of you can accomplish only so much during one session. If necessary, the consultant may recommend a follow-up visit to address substantive issues that remain unresolved after the initial session.

Sessions are scheduled for 30-minute slots. Students who want more time with a consultant may remain for an additional half hour after their session is completed provided no one else has scheduled an appointment for that time slot. Please note, however, that consultations are limited to two per day or four per week.

You should also be aware that if you are late, the writing consultant may assume you have canceled your appointment. If this happens, your time slot may be scheduled to someone else.

Lastly, it is important to note that the role of Writing Center staff is to help students become more effective writers, not to do the students’ work for them. For example, consultants do not “correct errors.” They can, however, point out several errors in a paper and teach the student how to identify and correct such errors himself. Remember that along with your writing assignments you should bring any pertinent instructions from your professor when you visit the Center, so our staff can best assist you.
